At the ISSCC 2020 event, AMD revealed the secret of the cheapness of its processors. The company talked about how chipsets, that is, combined chips with dissimilar crystals made using different technological processes, help save money.
The company noted that several things can reduce costs. Firstly, it is possible to produce only those components with advanced 7-nm technology that significantly benefit from this in speed. But the rest can be created according to the old process technology. Secondly, you can have eight CPU cores on a single chipset.
For example, a Ryzen 7 3700X processor with one Matisse chipset in a monolithic version would cost 50% more. And the Ryzen 9 3950X is 125% more expensive.
AMD claims to use this approach for both server and desktop processors. This allows her to keep the cost of products low in order to compete with Intel.
